Lancia

Flaminia Sport Zagato 2nd Series

Italian industrialist Carlo Pesenti inherited the family cement company Italcementi in 1946. Pesenti was also a car enthusiast and took over the Lancia company from the Lancia family in June 1956 whilst the Aurelia was in production.

A new generation of engineers arrived with the Pesenti era which sidelined the great Vittorio Jano. Pesenti tasked Antonio Fessia with the replacement for the Aurelia, to be named Flaminia. The new car was a refinement of the Aurelia concept retaining the V6 engine layout and rear-mounted transaxle/transmission, although the traditional Lancia sliding-pillar suspension arrangement was discontinued and replaced by coil springs and wishbones.

The production Flaminia saloon was designed by Pininfarina and was launched at the 1957 Geneva Motor Show. Initially the new model was equipped with drum brakes and optional discs but soon disc brakes would be standardised.

In addition to the four-door Berlina the Flaminia spawned a Pininfarina two-door coupe (based on Pininfarina’s exquisite Florida II prototype) plus a coupe and two-seat convertible by Touring. The most sporting model was the Flaminia Sport by Zagato.

To allow future increases in capacity a new all-alloy engine block was cast. The new engine initially had a 2.5 litre capacity, later growing to 2.8 litres.

Chassis no. 824.00.1665 is a 2nd Series Flaminia Sport Zagato 2.5 litre which features the signature Zagato double-bubble roof and is one of only 106 2nd Series examples built.

The car is currently fitted with a later type 826.100 2.8 litre unit with three Weber 35 DCNL carburettors. However, the correct specification type 823.11 2.5 litre engine that was in situ prior to the installation of the 2.8 unit is included in the sale and may well be the car’s original engine.

This beautiful Flaminia Sport Zagato is finished in Avorio Chantilly, an attractive creamy white colour complemented by a red leather interior.

The Flaminia was restored some time ago but remains in very good condition. It is fitted with a stainless steel exhaust system and has been maintained since 2022 by Heritage Cars of The Netherlands.

In 2022 new coolant hoses and tyres were fitted and in 2023 the car received an oil and filter service. The valves were adjusted and new rocker cover gaskets fitted. The front brakes were rebuilt with new calipers and pads and the brake fluid renewed along with other minor works. The 2023 invoices totalled over 7,000 euro.

In 2024 Heritage Cars carried out more works including replacing the brake master cylinder and fabricating a new bonnet support.

The car is currently registered in Belgium and was driven to us from there without issue.

This rare and desirable Lancia Flaminia Sport Zagato is ready to be enjoyed and can be viewed at our Hampshire premises.
