Launched in 1955 the TR3 was not only a commercial success but was also a force to be reckoned with in motorsport, with impressive results both on track and rallies including Le Mans and Mille Miglia.
The TR3 was significantly improved in 1957 with the addition of disc front brakes and a wider, more attractive front grille. The updated version became unofficially known as the TR3A.
Chassis TS/60372-L is a TR3A completed on the 24th September 1959 and destined for San Franciso. The new sports car was finished in Signal Red with a black leather interior and black hood and was specified with standard steel wheels.
In the 1980s, the car was purchased from US dealer Chequered Flag by British classic car dealer Marksdanes Classic Cars who carried out a restoration which included conversion from LHD to RHD and upgrade to wire wheels. The car was repainted to classic British Racing Green. Photographs of this restoration are on file.
On completion of its restoration in 1987, Marksdanes sold the TR3A to Frank Challener of Pilton, Somerset who enjoyed the car until July 1989 when he sold it back to Marksdanes.
Marksdanes very quickly sold it on to D. S. Carr of Volkswagen dealers Helston Garages Group who owned it until July 2001 when Gordon Spencer-Mustoe bought it for nostalgic reasons (he used to race TR3s).
Andrew March of Reading purchased the TR3A in July 2004 with nostalgia once more playing a part in the car’s history - March honeymooned in a Triumph TR and planned to recreate the trip.
In May 2010 the TR3A was sold to classic car specialist James Mitchell as his personal car. Mitchell then commissioned John W. Leyland of London to rebuild the engine which included new pistons and liners, bearings, conrod bolts, camshaft and followers, timing chain and tensioner. The cylinder head was sent away for specialist repair and included new valve guides and hardened valve seats.
New brake cylinders were fitted along with new brake pads, shoes and brake and clutch reservoirs. Other new parts included a new fanbelt, coolant hoses, suspension bushes, silent bloc steering bushes and new wire wheels from specialists MWS International.
The TR3A was then maintained by London-based Enginuity and latterly Classic Performance Engineering of Bicester. In 2011 the underside was treated to a coating of Waxoyl rustproofing and in 2013 the carpets and underlay were replaced. During his tenure Mitchell entered the TR3A in several sporting events including VSCC Silverstone and Pomeroy Trophy.
The car was purchased by the current owner in January 2016 who immediately treated it to a set of new rear leaf springs. In 2019 Hollier & Sons of Birmingham carried out over £10,000 of further restoration work which included repairs to the body and a repaint once more in classic British Racing Green. In addition, the interior was retrimmed and included rebuilding the seats with new springs and wadding. A new green hood and tonneau cover were also fitted.
During this work, the engine and gearbox were removed and various gaskets replaced and oil leaks addressed. Whilst the engine was out the under-bonnet area was repainted.
New bumpers were fitted along with the installation of a new High Torque Kenteam camshaft and followers. The carburettors were rebuilt and new coolant hoses, bonnet and boot hinges and fuel tank sender unit were installed plus a new high performance coil pack, starter motor and tacho conversion. The wiring was tidied and a number of items were removed, painted and refitted including the brake reservoir and servo, clutch cylinders, wiper motor, battery securing bracket and windscreen washer bottle.
In 2025 GTC Engineering of Stowe carried out additional restorative works including the replacement of the main and auxiliary wiring looms, cleaning of various electrical connections and fitting replacement lamp holders. In addition, the dynamo was replaced with a new Dynomator (alternator with the appearance of a dynamo) and the cooling fan and pulley were bead-blasted and painted. A new windscreen assembly was fitted along with new and glass and windscreen rubbers.
In August 2025 the overdrive solenoid was replaced and the gearbox oil changed. New indicator and horn switches were installed and the steering rack greased and remounted with newly fabricated brackets and gators. A new windscreen washer pump, repair temperature gauge was fitted and a new power steering motor with modified steering column was installed. Finally, a new thermostatic switch was fitted for the Kenlowe electric fan and new throttle brackets for smoother operation.
Today this beautifully restored TR3A remains in exceptional condition and is fully sorted having received over £30,000 of restoration and upgrades and having covered only around 13,000 miles since a full engine rebuild.
The car is on the button and ready to be enjoyed. Equipped with the desirable overdrive option and power steering, this TR3A must surely be one of the most sought after examples out there.
